What it actually does
A failed buffer object move to system memory during TTM swapout leaves an allocated resource unreleased, causing a memory leak in the Linux kernel DRM subsystem.
Why it matters to the business
Long-running systems performing graphics operations that trigger swapout under memory pressure may gradually exhaust kernel memory, leading to performance degradation, instability, or denial of service.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access crafts or triggers workloads that force repeated TTM buffer moves to system memory for swapout; when the move fails, resources leak, allowing gradual memory exhaustion without direct code execution.
How to fix it
Update the Linux kernel to a version containing commit af4e0ce2af8a8f0ff3b89702a1e18d8ec2c4a834 or later; rebuild and deploy the patched kernel across all affected systems.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the running kernel includes commit af4e0ce2af8a8f0ff3b89702a1e18d8ec2c4a834 via git log or kernel version strings; test swapout error paths under memory pressure to verify no leaks occur.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local execution or user privileges on a Linux system using affected DRM/TTM graphics drivers
- Generate repeated conditions that cause swapout of buffer objects under memory pressure
- Force move operations to fail in the error path to trigger resource leaks
- Repeat to accumulate leaked resources until system memory pressure causes denial of service
How to detect it
Review kernel logs for TTM swapout failures combined with unexplained increases in slab or page cache usage; correlate with graphics driver activity but note that exploitation leaves no distinctive artifacts beyond general memory pressure.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on systems with heavy graphics or DRM usage within standard patch cycles
- Monitor kernel memory usage and OOM events on graphics workloads as a temporary detection measure
- Review downstream distribution kernels for backports of the referenced commit
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/ttm: Don't leak a resource on swapout move error If moving the bo to system for swapout failed, we were leaking a resource. Fix.
