What it actually does

Potential out-of-bounds memory read when a static buffer passed to a trace function lacks a guaranteed NULL terminator after a failed bulk write operation in the xHCI debug capability early driver.

Why it matters to the business

Kernel instability or crashes on affected Linux systems during USB debug operations, increasing downtime risk for servers and embedded devices; low immediate exploitation likelihood reduces urgency but still requires patching across the ecosystem.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker would need to trigger failure conditions in xdbc_bulk_write() followed by xdbc_trace() on a non-NULL-terminated buffer; no public exploits or threat actor campaigns are known, and the issue was resolved proactively before widespread abuse.

How to fix it

Update the Linux kernel to the commit e8fb0f13e45cf361fd06593d3cb2d89915cd3bd0 or later stable releases that include the extra reserved zeroed byte in the static buffer.

How to confirm the fix worked

Verify the presence of the one-byte reservation and automatic zero-initialization in the xdbc_buf definition and confirm the patch is applied by checking the git commit history or kernel version string.

Typical attack path

  1. Gain local or adjacent access to a system with xHCI debug capability enabled
  2. Force xdbc_bulk_write() to fail under controlled conditions
  3. Invoke xdbc_trace() on the resulting unterminated buffer contents
  4. Trigger out-of-bounds memory access leading to denial of service or potential information disclosure

How to detect it

Review kernel logs for xhci-dbc or xdbc_trace related oops or panic messages; examine USB debug capability initialization sequences for signs of unexpected buffer handling failures.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize kernel upgrades on all systems exposing USB debug or early console features
  • Monitor for new stable kernel releases containing the referenced commit
  • Test USB debug functionality post-update to ensure trace paths remain stable

The record

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: usb: early: xhci-dbc: Fix a potential out-of-bound memory access If xdbc_bulk_write() fails, the values in 'buf' can be anything. So the string is not guaranteed to be NULL terminated when xdbc_trace() is called. Reserve an extra byte, which will be zeroed automatically because 'buf' is a static variable, in order to avoid troubles, should it happen.
