What it actually does

Use-after-free in Linux kernel xfrm decode_session6 triggered when an xfrm device is attached to an sfb qdisc; the skb cb field is modified during enqueue, so subsequent IPv6 transmission reads from a freed skbuff_small_head object.

Why it matters to the business

Linux servers and appliances handling IPv6 traffic with IPsec or virtual interfaces can experience kernel crashes or memory corruption, leading to denial of service and potential container or host compromise in high-density environments.

How an attack unfolds

Attacker sets up an xfrm device under an sfb qdisc on an IPv6 interface, then triggers packet transmission paths (for example via NDISC or forwarding) that cause the skb cb to be overwritten during queuing; decode_session6 later dereferences the stale cb pointer, producing a use-after-free that can be turned into arbitrary read/write or code execution by shaping the freed object.

How to fix it

Upgrade Linux kernels to versions containing commit da4cbaa75ed088b6d70db77b9103a27e2359e243 or apply the Debian package updates (5.10.46-1 and later) that zero the skb cb before xfrm transmission; where immediate patching is impossible, avoid combining xfrm devices with sfb qdisc on IPv6 interfaces.

How to confirm the fix worked

Verify the running kernel contains the fix commit or matches the listed fixed package versions; confirm absence of the decode_session6 KASAN report under synthetic IPv6 transmit workloads with xfrm+sfb; re-test after reboot to ensure the patch persists.

Typical attack path

  1. Identify hosts running vulnerable kernels with xfrm and sfb qdisc configurations
  2. Attach or force an xfrm device onto an sfb qdisc handling IPv6 traffic
  3. Send or induce IPv6 packets that exercise the transmit path through __xfrm_decode_session
  4. Trigger the KASAN-detected slab-use-after-free in decode_session6 during softirq or timer context

How to detect it

Search kernel logs and dmesg for KASAN reports referencing decode_session6+0x103f, slab-use-after-free on skbuff_small_head, and call traces containing xfrmi_xmit or __xfrm_decode_session; correlate with IPv6 NDISC or forwarding activity on hosts using xfrm devices.

  • BUG: KASAN: slab-use-after-free in decode_session6
  • Read of size 1 at addr .* by task swapper
  • xfrmi_xmit.*__xfrm_decode_session
  • skbuff_small_head

What your security team should do

  • Apply the listed kernel or Debian package updates within the next maintenance window
  • Audit production systems for xfrm devices attached to sfb or other qdiscs and migrate to safer queuing disciplines
  • Monitor kernel logs for slab-use-after-free signatures in decode_session6 and related xfrm paths
  • Prioritize systems exposed to external IPv6 traffic or running containers that rely on xfrm

The record

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: xfrm: fix slab-use-after-free in decode_session6 When the xfrm device is set to the qdisc of the sfb type, the cb field of the sent skb may be modified during enqueuing. Then, slab-use-after-free may occur when the xfrm device sends IPv6 packets.
