What it actually does
Null pointer dereference in the AMD display driver (amdgpu_dm_fini) when adev->dm.dc is NULL before invoking dc_dmub_srv_destroy, classified as memory corruption.
Why it matters to the business
Systems using AMD GPUs on affected Linux kernels risk unexpected crashes or instability during driver unload or shutdown sequences; widespread in Debian and upstream kernel deployments increases operational disruption risk for graphics workloads.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access triggers the amdgpu_dm_fini path under conditions where the dc pointer remains uninitialized, causing the kernel to dereference NULL and potentially panic; no known remote or unauthenticated paths exist and no named threat actors have been observed exploiting it.
How to fix it
Update to a fixed kernel version: Debian 11/12/13/14 packages 5.10.46-1 or later, or upstream commit 624a60911b71af08a912ee8a296b271b3e7b34ab; apply the NULL check before dc_dmub_srv_destroy as described in the fix.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify running kernel version matches or exceeds the listed fixed releases; inspect amdgpu_dm.c for the added NULL guard around dc_dmub_srv_destroy; confirm no NULL dereference oops appears in dmesg during driver unload tests.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local access on a vulnerable AMD GPU system
- Trigger display driver initialization or removal sequence that reaches amdgpu_dm_fini with dc set to NULL
- Kernel dereferences NULL pointer leading to oops or panic
How to detect it
Review kernel logs (dmesg, /var/log/kern.log, journalctl) for null pointer dereference oops mentioning amdgpu_dm_fini or dc_dmub_srv_destroy; correlate with AMD GPU driver unload events.
- amdgpu_dm_fini
- dc_dmub_srv_destroy
- NULL dereference in amdgpu display code
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel upgrades on all AMD GPU hosts within standard change windows given low EPSS and absence from KEV
- Monitor for kernel oops related to amdgpu_dm_fini in production logs
- Test updated kernels in staging environments before broad rollout to avoid graphics regressions
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/amd/display: Fix potential null dereference The adev->dm.dc pointer can be NULL and dereferenced in amdgpu_dm_fini() without checking. Add a NULL pointer check before calling dc_dmub_srv_destroy(). Found by Linux Verification Center (linuxtesting.org) with SVACE.
