What it actually does

Uninitialized value access in the HSR driver's fill_frame_info function when handling packets with ETH_P_8021Q protocol, due to lack of VLAN support leading to use of uninitialized memory from skb allocation paths.

Why it matters to the business

Systems relying on HSR networking may experience kernel instability, crashes, or potential information disclosure during packet transmission, increasing operational risk in industrial or high-availability network environments.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker crafts and sends network packets using the packet socket interface with VLAN-tagged protocols to reach hsr_forward_skb, triggering the uninit-value read in fill_frame_info during skb processing in the kernel's networking stack.

How to fix it

Update the Linux kernel to a version containing commit 1e90a93ac4845c31724ec5dc96fb51e608435a9d or later; for affected distributions apply the corresponding fixed package versions such as squid 4.12-1 equivalents where applicable.

How to confirm the fix worked

Verify the presence of the fix commit in the running kernel source or confirm updated package versions; test by attempting to transmit ETH_P_8021Q packets over HSR interfaces and monitor for KMSAN reports.

Typical attack path

  1. Create a raw packet socket and allocate an skb with frags
  2. Set protocol to ETH_P_8021Q in the outgoing frame
  3. Invoke sendmsg on the packet socket to trigger hsr_dev_xmit
  4. Reach hsr_forward_skb and fill_frame_info with uninitialized data

How to detect it

Inspect kernel logs for KMSAN uninit-value reports referencing fill_frame_info or hsr_forward_skb; review packet capture artifacts showing ETH_P_8021Q over HSR paths; check for unusual sendmsg activity on packet sockets.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize kernel updates on systems using HSR protocol
  • Disable HSR interfaces if not required until patched
  • Monitor for kernel oops or KMSAN warnings related to hsr_forward.c
  • Review network configurations for VLAN usage with HSR
