What it actually does

Out-of-bounds read in qla4xxx driver when parsing nlattrs without length validation in qla4xxx_set_chap_entry, qla4xxx_iface_set_param, and qla4xxx_sysfs_ddb_set_param, allowing malformed attributes (e.g., length 0) to leak heap memory contents.

Why it matters to the business

Potential exposure of sensitive kernel heap data on systems using QLogic iSCSI hardware, increasing risk of information leakage in storage environments; low exploitability reduces immediate urgency but kernel updates remain necessary for long-term hygiene.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker with local access crafts malicious netlink attributes lacking proper length fields and submits them through sysfs or interface parameter paths in the qla4xxx driver, bypassing validation to trigger an out-of-bounds read that returns uninitialized heap data.

How to fix it

Upgrade the Linux kernel to the version containing commit cfa6a1a79ed6d336fac7a5d87eb5471e4401829f or later; rebuild and reboot after applying the patch that adds nla_len checks before accessing nlattr data.

How to confirm the fix worked

Verify the presence of nla_len length validation before nlattr dereference in the three affected functions; confirm kernel version reports the fixed commit and test with crafted zero-length nlattrs to ensure EINVAL is returned.

Typical attack path

  1. Locate Linux system exposing qla4xxx sysfs or netlink interfaces
  2. Construct nlattr with zero or invalid length
  3. Invoke qla4xxx_set_chap_entry, qla4xxx_iface_set_param, or qla4xxx_sysfs_ddb_set_param via user-space tooling
  4. Trigger OOB read and capture leaked heap contents

How to detect it

Review kernel logs for qla4xxx-related errors or unexpected netlink activity; inspect sysfs parameter changes for malformed attribute submissions, though specific exploitation artifacts are not publicly documented.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize kernel upgrade to fixed commit across all affected hosts
  • Audit systems for qla4xxx driver usage and restrict unprivileged sysfs/netlink access where feasible
  • Monitor upstream stable kernel releases for related backports

The record

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: scsi: qla4xxx: Add length check when parsing nlattrs There are three places that qla4xxx parses nlattrs: - qla4xxx_set_chap_entry() - qla4xxx_iface_set_param() - qla4xxx_sysfs_ddb_set_param() and each of them directly converts the nlattr to specific pointer of structure without length checking. This could be dangerous as those attributes are not validated and a malformed nlattr (e.g., length 0) could result in an OOB read that leaks heap dirty data. Add the nla_len check before accessing the nlattr data and return EINVAL if the length check fails.
