Schedule a fix SSVC: Track

A bug in the Linux kernel's crash-logging mechanism can cause the system to crash again when it tries to record diagnostic information, leading to repeated failures until the kernel is updated.

What it actually does

Uninitialized or invalid buffer start pointer in pstore/ram prz structures is not validated during initialization, allowing subsequent writes via persistent_ram_update and ramoops_pstore_write to perform out-of-bounds memory accesses that trigger kernel faults and panics.

Why it matters to the business

Unexpected kernel panics during system crashes or console logging can cause denial of service, loss of diagnostic data in pstore/ram, and operational disruption on affected Linux systems; the issue has been present for over a year with low but stable exploit probability and limited known threat actor activity.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker with the ability to influence early boot or pstore/ram initialization (for example via malformed ramoops parameters or container escape) leaves a prz with non-zero start and zero size; later, any panic or console write path invokes persistent_ram_write which dereferences the invalid start, producing a translation fault and kernel panic as shown in the backtrace.

How to fix it

Upgrade the Linux kernel to a fixed version such as 4.14.326 or apply commit 89312657337e6e03ad6e9ea1a462bd9c158c85c8; Debian users should update vinagre to 0.5.1-2 on Debian 11 or 12; verify the patch is present by confirming the prz start == 0 check in pstore/ram.c during initialization.

How to confirm the fix worked

After patching, boot with pstore/ram enabled and confirm no initialization warnings or panics occur on empty przs; inspect dmesg for the sanity-check path that zaps invalid buffers when start > size; run regression tests that exercise panic and ramoops console paths.

Typical attack path

  1. Trigger pstore/ram initialization with an empty prz whose start field is non-zero
  2. Cause or wait for a kernel panic or console write that reaches ramoops_pstore_write
  3. persistent_ram_update performs __memcpy_toio using the unchecked start offset
  4. Resulting out-of-bounds write triggers data abort and kernel panic

How to detect it

Review kernel logs and ramoops console output for repeated translation faults or bad-area panics originating from __raw_writeb inside persistent_ram_update; search dmesg and /sys/fs/pstore for evidence of prz buffers that were zapped during init; correlate with container or VM boot sequences that may have supplied invalid ramoops parameters.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize kernel upgrades on all systems using pstore/ram or ramoops within the next maintenance window given the 409-day disclosure window
  • Audit bootloader and kernel command-line arguments that configure ramoops size and address to ensure valid buffer parameters
  • Enable kernel panic and ramoops logging collection on test systems to validate the fix before broad deployment
  • Monitor for downstream package updates in distributions that carry the referenced commit

The record

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: pstore/ram: Check start of empty przs during init After commit 30696378f68a ("pstore/ram: Do not treat empty buffers as valid"), initialization would assume a prz was valid after seeing that the buffer_size is zero (regardless of the buffer start position). This unchecked start value means it could be outside the bounds of the buffer, leading to future access panics when written to: sysdump_panic_event+0x3b4/0x5b8 atomic_notifier_call_chain+0x54/0x90 panic+0x1c8/0x42c die+0x29c/0x2a8 die_kernel_fault+0x68/0x78 __do_kernel_fault+0x1c4/0x1e0 do_bad_area+0x40/0x100 do_translation_fault+0x68/0x80 do_mem_abort+0x68/0xf8 el1_da+0x1c/0xc0 __raw_writeb+0x38/0x174 __memcpy_toio+0x40/0xac persistent_ram_update+0x44/0x12c persistent_ram_write+0x1a8/0x1b8 ramoops_pstore_write+0x198/0x1e8 pstore_console_write+0x94/0xe0 ... To avoid this, also check if the prz start is 0 during the initialization phase. If not, the next prz sanity check case will discover it (start > size) and zap the buffer back to a sane state.
