What it actually does
A realloc failure in the uwrite function of recordmcount leaves the original 'file_append' buffer pointer nulled without freeing the prior allocation, resulting in a memory leak.
Why it matters to the business
Build processes on affected Linux systems may experience gradual memory growth, increasing resource consumption during kernel compilation or maintenance tasks, though the issue has low exploitation likelihood and no reported ransomware use.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access would need to repeatedly trigger realloc failures against the recordmcount tool during its execution, which is uncommon in standard operation and not observed in known campaigns.
How to fix it
Upgrade affected packages to the fixed versions: crip on Debian 11/12/13/14 to 3.7-5, and Linux kernel sources to commit bd39f68a309a947670379bf9a39b16c584f86ddb.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm installed package versions match the listed fixed releases and verify the presence of the referenced commit in kernel source trees used for builds.
Typical attack path
- Locate systems running vulnerable recordmcount versions
- Supply crafted input sequences that force realloc failure
- Monitor for unreleased memory allocations
How to detect it
Inspect build logs and system memory statistics for repeated allocation patterns tied to recordmcount execution; no widespread exploitation indicators have been reported.
What your security team should do
- Apply the listed fixed package versions across all Debian and Linux kernel build environments
- Review build tooling memory usage patterns for unexpected growth
- Prioritize updates on systems performing frequent kernel compilations
