What it actually does
Negative xlate_pos value passed to BIT shift in switchtec_ntb_mw_set_trans causes shift-out-of-bounds when ntb_mw_clear_trans supplies zero addr and size.
Why it matters to the business
Kernel instability or crashes on systems using affected Switchtec NTB hardware, with added urgency from long exposure window and multiple related kernel privilege-escalation reports in the same ecosystem.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker invokes ntb_mw_clear_trans with zero parameters, driving xlate_pos negative; the subsequent BIT operation triggers UBSAN-detected out-of-bounds shift, potentially leading to memory corruption or denial of service. Related threat activity around similar Linux kernel privilege-escalation CVEs indicates possible chaining attempts.
How to fix it
Apply the upstream fix ensuring xlate_pos >= 0 before BIT; update to kernel commit f56951f211f181410a383d305e8d370993e45294 or Red Hat pam packages 1.5.1-23.el9_4 and later on rhel_eus 9.4.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm kernel build contains the positive/zero check before BIT; verify package versions match or exceed the listed fixed releases; run ntb_mw_clear_trans test cases and monitor for absence of UBSAN reports.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local access or trigger NTB memory-window API on affected kernel
- Call ntb_mw_clear_trans(0, 0) via userspace or driver path
- Trigger negative shift exponent in switchtec_ntb_mw_set_trans
- Observe UBSAN fault or exploit resulting memory corruption
How to detect it
Search kernel logs for UBSAN shift-out-of-bounds messages referencing ntb_hw_switchtec.c and negative shift exponents; review dmesg or journalctl for MW addr/size 0x0 patterns preceding the fault.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize upgrade of affected kernel and pam packages within 30 days given publication age and related kernel exploit reports
- Audit systems for Switchtec NTB hardware usage and apply the listed fixed versions
- Enable UBSAN or kernel hardening features to surface similar shift issues early
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ntb_hw_switchtec: Fix shift-out-of-bounds in switchtec_ntb_mw_set_trans There is a kernel API ntb_mw_clear_trans() would pass 0 to both addr and size. This would make xlate_pos negative. [ 23.734156] switchtec switchtec0: MW 0: part 0 addr 0x0000000000000000 size 0x0000000000000000 [ 23.734158] ================================================================================ [ 23.734172] UBSAN: shift-out-of-bounds in drivers/ntb/hw/mscc/ntb_hw_switchtec.c:293:7 [ 23.734418] shift exponent -1 is negative Ensuring xlate_pos is a positive or zero before BIT.
