What it actually does
NULL pointer dereference in kernel getattr path when vfs_getattr_nosec() is called on overlayfs or ecryptfs; the missing GETATTR_NOSEC flag causes fallback to vfs_getattr() which invokes security_inode_getattr() on an exiting process lacking current->fs.
Why it matters to the business
Kernel panic or denial of service on Linux systems using overlayfs or ecryptfs together with IMA or similar LSMs; operational disruption and potential data loss on affected hosts until patched kernels are deployed.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access or the ability to influence file operations on an overlayfs mount triggers vfs_getattr_nosec during a process exit window; the absent flag leads to the security check on a NULL fs context, crashing the kernel.
How to fix it
Apply the upstream fix in commit 3fb0fa08641903304b9d81d52a379ff031dc41d4 or later stable kernels that propagate the GETATTR_NOSEC flag and avoid the security call in overlayfs/ecryptfs getattr handlers.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm kernel source contains the GETATTR_NOSEC flag handling and the overlayfs/ecryptfs getattr logic checks the flag before choosing vfs_getattr versus vfs_getattr_nosec; test attribute operations under IMA on patched builds.
Typical attack path
- Gain local execution or file-system interaction on target
- Perform file attribute lookup that reaches vfs_getattr_nosec on overlayfs
- Time the operation with process exit to hit the missing current->fs condition
- Trigger kernel NULL dereference and system instability
How to detect it
Review kernel logs and crash dumps for NULL pointer dereference during getattr or security_inode_getattr calls involving overlayfs; correlate with process exit events and IMA-enabled systems.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel upgrades containing commit 3fb0fa08641903304b9d81d52a379ff031dc41d4 on all systems using overlayfs or ecryptfs
- Audit workloads for overlayfs/ecryptfs + IMA combinations and schedule reboots after patching
- Monitor kernel logs for NULL pointer dereference signatures in getattr paths until patches are applied
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: fs: Pass AT_GETATTR_NOSEC flag to getattr interface function When vfs_getattr_nosec() calls a filesystem's getattr interface function then the 'nosec' should propagate into this function so that vfs_getattr_nosec() can again be called from the filesystem's gettattr rather than vfs_getattr(). The latter would add unnecessary security checks that the initial vfs_getattr_nosec() call wanted to avoid. Therefore, introduce the getattr flag GETATTR_NOSEC and allow to pass with the new getattr_flags parameter to the getattr interface function. In overlayfs and ecryptfs use this flag to determine which one of the two functions to call. In a recent code change introduced to IMA vfs_getattr_nosec() ended up calling vfs_getattr() in overlayfs, which in turn called security_inode_getattr() on an exiting process that did not have current->fs set anymore, which then caused a kernel NULL pointer dereference. With this change the call to security_inode_getattr() can be avoided, thus avoiding the NULL pointer dereference.
