What it actually does
The flaw permits TCP sockets and MPTCP subflows to construct egress packets exceeding 64K, surpassing the maximum DSS data size and resulting in misrepresented lengths on the wire that corrupt the stream.
Why it matters to the business
Systems relying on MPTCP for multi-path TCP connections may experience data corruption and unreliable networking, impacting high-throughput or resilient network environments; low urgency as the issue is not known to be exploited in the wild.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker triggers large GSO packet construction on MPTCP-enabled paths, causing the kernel to send oversized segments that exceed DSS limits and corrupt the data stream observed at the receiver.
How to fix it
Update the Linux kernel to a version containing commit 70ff9b65a72885b3a2dfde6709da1f19b85fa696 which explicitly bounds the maximum GSO size for MPTCP.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify the kernel source includes the bounding logic for GSO size in MPTCP code paths and confirm absence of the oversized packet warnings during MPTCP traffic tests.
Typical attack path
- Enable MPTCP on affected Linux kernel
- Send traffic that causes GSO size to exceed 64K
- Observe stream corruption and warnings in net/mptcp/protocol.c during packet processing
How to detect it
Search system logs for kernel warnings originating from net/mptcp/protocol.c involving __mptcp_move_skbs_from_subflow and oversized packet handling during established TCP sessions.
- __mptcp_move_skbs_from_subflow+0x2604/0x26e0
- WARNING: CPU: .* at net/mptcp/protocol.c:705
- netlink: 8 bytes leftover after parsing attributes in process
What your security team should do
- Apply the fixed kernel commit across all MPTCP-enabled systems
- Monitor for kernel warnings related to mptcp protocol processing
- Test MPTCP functionality post-update to ensure stream integrity
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: mptcp: deal with large GSO size After the blamed commit below, the TCP sockets (and the MPTCP subflows) can build egress packets larger than 64K. That exceeds the maximum DSS data size, the length being misrepresent on the wire and the stream being corrupted, as later observed on the receiver: WARNING: CPU: 0 PID: 9696 at net/mptcp/protocol.c:705 __mptcp_move_skbs_from_subflow+0x2604/0x26e0 CPU: 0 PID: 9696 Comm: syz-executor.7 Not tainted 6.6.0-rc5-gcd8bdf563d46 #45 Hardware name: QEMU Standard PC (i440FX + PIIX, 1996), BIOS 1.11.0-2.el7 04/01/2014 netlink: 8 bytes leftover after parsing attributes in process `syz-executor.4'.
