What it actually does

The vulnerability causes cleartext passwords to be written to server logs due to a variable assignment error in the session handling code where a password value is stored in a username variable.

Why it matters to the business

Credentials may be exposed in log files, increasing the risk of account compromise if logs are accessed by unauthorized parties. The issue affects older versions of the library and has not been observed in active exploitation campaigns.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker with access to the server logs can retrieve the exposed passwords from the log entries generated during authentication attempts to the manage sieve service.

How to fix it

Upgrade KDE libksieve to version 23.03.80 or later.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm upgrade to 23.03.80 or newer; inspect recent log files to ensure authentication entries no longer contain password strings.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain read access to server log files containing kmanagesieve output
  2. Parse log entries for authentication events
  3. Extract credential values that were incorrectly logged
  4. Reuse extracted credentials against the target service or other systems

How to detect it

Review server logs from the manage sieve component for authentication records that contain unexpected credential data; search for lines referencing session handling during login.

What your security team should do

  • Apply the 23.03.80 update across all affected deployments
  • Review historical logs for any exposed credentials and rotate affected passwords
  • Enable or enforce log sanitization for authentication data

The record

In KDE libksieve before 23.03.80, kmanagesieve/session.cpp places a cleartext password in server logs because a username variable is accidentally given a password value.
