What it actually does
Missing reserved-memory node in the arm64 device tree for the bootloader-initialized framebuffer on SDM845-DB845c causes the ARM SMMU to treat the region as normal memory, resulting in unhandled context faults and kernel panic.
Why it matters to the business
Systems using the affected board experience boot-time or runtime crashes when the bootloader allocates splash memory, producing instability and requiring manual intervention or reboots.
How an attack unfolds
The condition is triggered automatically on boot when the bootloader sets up the contiguous splash framebuffer; no remote attacker action is required and the issue manifests as a stability fault rather than code execution.
How to fix it
Update the Linux kernel source to include commit dc1ab6577475b0460ba4261cd9caec37bd62ca0b or later; rebuild and deploy the fixed kernel image on affected devices.
How to confirm the fix worked
Inspect the device tree source for a reserved-memory node covering the splash region; confirm absence of SMMU context-fault messages in dmesg after boot with splash enabled.
Typical attack path
- Boot the kernel on SDM845-DB845c hardware with a bootloader that allocates splash memory
- SMMU attempts to map the framebuffer region without a reserved entry
- Unhandled context fault is raised and the kernel panics
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and dmesg output for 'arm-smmu: Unhandled context fault' entries referencing the splash memory region on DB845c hardware.
- arm-smmu: Unhandled context fault
- splash memory region
- dc1ab6577475b0460ba4261cd9caec37bd62ca0b
What your security team should do
- Apply the device-tree fix to all SDM845-DB845c kernel builds
- Test boot behavior with bootloader splash enabled before production deployment
- Monitor kernel logs for SMMU faults on similar Qualcomm platforms
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: arm64: dts: qcom: sdm845-db845c: Mark cont splash memory region as reserved Adding a reserved memory region for the framebuffer memory (the splash memory region set up by the bootloader). It fixes a kernel panic (arm-smmu: Unhandled context fault at this particular memory region) reported on DB845c running v5.10.y.
