What it actually does

Null pointer dereference in nvme_fc_io_getuuid() when an FC LLDD passes an nvmefc_fcp_req for an AEN operation whose nvme_fc_fcp_op has a null request pointer, allowing kernel crash or memory corruption.

Why it matters to the business

NVMe over Fibre Channel storage paths may experience sudden kernel panics and system downtime in Linux environments handling storage fabrics; low exploit probability and no observed campaigns reduce urgency but stability concerns remain for affected deployments.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker able to trigger or influence AEN operations in the nvme-fc driver supplies an nvmefc_fcp_req whose backing request structure is null; the subsequent call to nvme_fc_io_getuuid dereferences the null pointer before any validation occurs.

How to fix it

Apply a Linux kernel update containing commit be90c9e29dd59b7d19a73297a1590ff3ec1d22ea which adds the missing request pointer validation before dereference.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the patched kernel source contains the pointer check in nvme_fc_io_getuuid() and test that AEN operations complete without dereference faults under nvme-fc workloads.

Typical attack path

1. Obtain local access or control sufficient to initiate NVMe-FC AEN operations
2. Cause nvme_fc_fcp_op to be initialized with a null request pointer
3. Invoke nvme_fc_io_getuuid on the associated nvmefc_fcp_req
4. Trigger kernel panic or undefined behavior from the null dereference
