What it actually does

The box_deserialize_reusing function in the deserialization path mishandles attacker-supplied data from a SELECT statement, triggering unbounded resource consumption or crash and resulting in denial of service.

Why it matters to the business

Database services become unavailable, interrupting query workloads and dependent applications until the process is restarted.

How an attack unfolds

An unauthenticated remote attacker crafts and submits a malicious SELECT statement that reaches the vulnerable deserialization routine; the malformed input causes the server to exhaust resources or abort, producing a denial-of-service condition. Public exploit code exists and the flaw has been known for over two years.

How to fix it

Upgrade to a patched release of Virtuoso once available; in the interim restrict network exposure of the SQL endpoint, apply query allow-listing, and monitor for anomalous SELECT traffic that exercises deserialization paths.

How to confirm the fix worked

Attempt to reproduce the reported SELECT statement against a test instance and confirm the server remains stable; review process logs and resource metrics for absence of crashes after the change.

Typical attack path

  1. Identify an exposed Virtuoso instance accepting SQL queries
  2. Send a crafted SELECT statement that triggers box_deserialize_reusing
  3. Observe server crash or sustained high CPU/memory usage confirming DoS

How to detect it

Review database query logs and system crash dumps for SELECT statements immediately preceding process termination or resource exhaustion events; correlate with network connection records to the SQL listener.

What your security team should do

  • Block unauthenticated network access to Virtuoso SQL ports until a fixed version is deployed
  • Implement query logging and anomaly detection for SELECT statements
  • Schedule upgrade as soon as a patched package is published
  • Test failover and restart procedures to reduce recovery time from DoS events

The record

An issue in the box_deserialize_reusing function in openlink virtuoso-opensource v7.2.11 allows attackers to cause a Denial of Service (DoS) after running a SELECT statement.
