What it actually does
The flaw is a heap-based buffer overflow in PSD file parsing caused by insufficient validation of attacker-controlled length fields before copying data into heap memory. A crafted Photoshop/PSD file can corrupt process memory and may allow arbitrary code execution with the privileges of the application or process that parses the file. Successful exploitation can provide the attacker confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact within the current user context; failed exploitation is likely to cause an application crash. User interaction is required, such as opening a malicious PSD file or causing an affected parser to process one.
Why it matters to the business
An attacker could compromise a workstation or file-processing workflow by convincing a user or automated content pipeline to open a malicious image file. This can lead to malware execution, theft of files accessible to the user, tampering with creative assets or source material, and interruption of image-processing operations. Although this issue is not currently listed in CISA KEV and no public exploit maturity is provided, the EPSS score is high, indicating meaningful exploitation likelihood and warranting timely remediation. For Alpine v3.17 package tracking, python3 is listed as fixed in version 3.10.15-r0, so environments relying on that package metadata should ensure they are at or above the fixed release.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker prepares a malformed PSD file containing crafted length values that trigger an unchecked copy into a heap buffer during parsing. The attacker then delivers the file through phishing, a shared drive, a web download, a ticket attachment, a design collaboration platform, or any workflow where images are previewed or converted. When a user or automated service opens or processes the file with a vulnerable component, heap memory is corrupted. Depending on exploit reliability and platform protections, the attacker may achieve code execution in the context of the affected process, enabling payload execution, persistence under the current user, credential or file theft, or lateral movement using the compromised user’s access. If exploitation is unsuccessful, the observable result may be a crash of the image-processing application or parser.
How to fix it
Upgrade affected software and distribution packages to fixed versions. For Alpine v3.17 package metadata in the input, upgrade python3 to 3.10.15-r0 or later. For systems running GIMP or components that parse PSD files, apply the vendor-provided fixed release or security update that addresses the PSD parser heap overflow. If immediate patching is not possible, reduce exposure by blocking or quarantining untrusted PSD files, disabling automatic PSD preview/conversion in high-risk workflows, restricting file-opening to sandboxed environments, and ensuring endpoint protections and exploit mitigations such as ASLR, DEP/NX, and application sandboxing are enabled. Treat design-file ingestion services as untrusted-content processors and run them with least privilege.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm package and application versions against the fixed release information. On Alpine v3.17, verify that the installed python3 package is 3.10.15-r0 or later using package inventory or `apk info -v python3`. For GIMP or PSD-processing components, verify the installed build includes the vendor fix and that no vulnerable copies remain in containers, desktop images, golden images, CI runners, or file-conversion services. Test controls by confirming untrusted PSD attachments are scanned, quarantined, or opened only in a sandbox. Review vulnerability scanner output after patching and ensure the CVE no longer appears in authenticated package scans or software composition reports.
Typical attack path
- Identify organizations or users likely to open PSD/design files or operate automated image-processing workflows.
- Create a malicious PSD file that abuses malformed length fields in the vulnerable parser.
- Deliver the file through email, messaging, shared storage, web download, project management systems, or creative collaboration tools.
- Wait for a user or automated job to open, preview, convert, or otherwise parse the file.
- Trigger heap memory corruption during PSD parsing.
- Execute attacker-controlled code in the context of the parsing process or crash the application if exploitation fails.
- Use the compromised user or process context to access local files, stage malware, steal data, or attempt further movement.
How to detect it
Look for evidence that a malicious PSD file was opened or processed shortly before a crash, unusual child process, or suspicious network activity. Relevant log sources include EDR process telemetry, operating system crash logs, application logs for GIMP or image conversion services, email security gateway logs, web proxy/download logs, file-sharing audit logs, and sandbox detonation results. Hunt for PSD files received from external senders or downloaded from the web, followed by `gimp`, PSD loader components, image thumbnailers, or conversion utilities spawning unexpected processes such as shells, PowerShell, Python, curl, wget, certutil, mshta, rundll32, or cmd. On Linux, review syslog, journald, apport, coredumpctl, auditd, and EDR data for segmentation faults or heap corruption involving GIMP or PSD-related loaders. On Windows, review Application Event Logs, Windows Error Reporting artifacts, Sysmon process creation events, and EDR memory/crash alerts involving GIMP or image-processing tools. Preserve suspicious PSD files and associated crash dumps for reverse engineering, because no single CVE-specific network signature or universal file hash is derivable from the vulnerability description alone.

What your security team should do
- Prioritize remediation because the EPSS score is high, the vulnerability is remotely triggerable through malicious file delivery, and exploitation can result in code execution after user interaction.
- Upgrade Alpine v3.17 python3 packages to 3.10.15-r0 or later where this CVE is reported by package inventory, and update GIMP/PSD-parsing software to the vendor-fixed release.
- Search endpoint and email telemetry for recent PSD files from external or untrusted sources, especially files followed by application crashes or child process creation from image-editing software.
- Temporarily restrict automatic previewing, thumbnailing, conversion, or indexing of PSD files from untrusted sources until affected systems are patched.
- Harden creative and file-processing workstations with least privilege, EDR, application control, and sandboxing for externally sourced design files.
- Add detection logic for suspicious child processes spawned by GIMP or file-parsing utilities, such as shells, scripting engines, download tools, or credential-access tools.
- Ensure incident responders collect suspicious PSD files, crash dumps, endpoint process trees, and file provenance data for forensic review.
The record
GIMP PSD File Parsing Heap-based Buffer Overflow Remote Code Execution Vulnerability. This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on affected installations of GIMP. User interaction is required to exploit this vulnerability in that the target must visit a malicious page or open a malicious file. The specific flaw exists within the parsing of PSD files. The issue results from the lack of proper validation of the length of user-supplied data prior to copying it to a heap-based buffer. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to execute arbitrary code in the context of the current process. Was ZDI-CAN-22094.
