What it actually does

Heap-based buffer overflow in DDS file parser allows arbitrary code execution within the GIMP process context due to missing length validation on user-supplied data.

Why it matters to the business

Attackers can fully compromise workstations used for image editing, enabling theft of sensitive files, deployment of malware, or lateral movement with moderate urgency given stable exploit likelihood and widespread use of GIMP in creative workflows.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker creates a specially crafted DDS image containing oversized data, delivers it via email, download link, or malicious webpage, and waits for the victim to open the file in GIMP; the missing bounds check during parsing overflows the heap buffer and redirects execution to attacker-controlled code.

How to fix it

Upgrade gnome/gimp to the commit 1651e6e767965cf055e05d13e075095d226f1c66 or later; rebuild from source or obtain a package containing this fix. Until updated, avoid opening untrusted DDS files.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the installed GIMP binary or source tree contains commit 1651e6e767965cf055e05d13e075095d226f1c66; re-test parsing of known-malformed DDS samples and verify no crash or unexpected memory writes occur.

Typical attack path

  1. Craft malicious DDS file with oversized pixel or header data
  2. Host or send the file to the target (web, email, USB)
  3. Victim opens the file in vulnerable GIMP installation
  4. Parser copies unchecked data into heap buffer
  5. Overflow corrupts heap metadata and achieves code execution

How to detect it

Review GIMP crash logs and system process-creation events immediately after DDS files are opened; look for unexpected child processes or memory-corruption indicators in application logs.

What your security team should do

  • Immediately update all GIMP installations to the fixed commit
  • Block or sandbox GIMP when handling files from untrusted sources
  • Add GIMP to the software inventory and patch-management process
  • Monitor for new exploit code targeting this DDS parser flaw

The record

GIMP DDS File Parsing Heap-based Buffer Overflow Remote Code Execution Vulnerability. This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on affected installations of GIMP. User interaction is required to exploit this vulnerability in that the target must visit a malicious page or open a malicious file. The specific flaw exists within the parsing of DDS files. The issue results from the lack of proper validation of the length of user-supplied data prior to copying it to a heap-based buffer. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to execute code in the context of the current process. Was ZDI-CAN-22093.
