What it actually does
A correctness issue in WebKit causes type confusion during web content processing, resulting in memory corruption that allows arbitrary code execution.
Why it matters to the business
Attackers can remotely compromise devices through malicious web content, enabling data theft, malware deployment, or persistence; the vulnerability affects widely used Apple platforms with over 1000 days of public exposure and slight EPSS increase.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker crafts specially formatted web content that triggers the type confusion flaw in WebKit when rendered by Safari or other affected browsers on macOS, iOS, or iPadOS; successful exploitation grants arbitrary code execution in the browser process context, potentially bypassing sandbox protections.
How to fix it
Upgrade affected systems to macOS Sonoma 14, Safari 17, iOS 17, or iPadOS 17. Apply the listed fixed kernel versions for Debian 11/12/13 (5.10.92-1 or 5.15.15-1) and Ubuntu 20.04/22.04 LTS variants (specific 5.15.0 or 5.4.0 packages as provided).
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm installed browser and OS versions match or exceed the fixed releases; review system logs for WebKit-related crashes or unexpected process behavior post-update.
Typical attack path
- Attacker creates malicious webpage exploiting the WebKit correctness flaw
- Content is hosted on attacker-controlled site or delivered via phishing
- Victim visits the page using an affected browser version
- Memory corruption occurs leading to arbitrary code execution
How to detect it
Review browser process logs and crash reports for WebKit anomalies; correlate with network logs showing visits to suspicious domains around the time of unexpected code execution or privilege escalation.
What your security team should do
- Immediately deploy updates to macOS, iOS, iPadOS, and Safari across all managed devices
- Monitor EPSS trend and threat actor mentions for any increase in exploitation activity
- Enforce web content filtering and browser isolation where patches cannot be applied promptly
The record
A correctness issue was addressed with improved checks. This issue is fixed in macOS Sonoma 14, Safari 17, iOS 17 and iPadOS 17. Processing web content may lead to arbitrary code execution.
