What it actually does
Resource exhaustion triggered in opj_t1_decode_cblks during processing of a specially crafted image, resulting in denial of service.
Why it matters to the business
Image-handling services and applications become unavailable or slow when attackers supply malicious files, disrupting operations and requiring restarts or resource recovery.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker creates a malicious image file designed to trigger excessive memory or CPU consumption inside the decoder, then delivers the file through any channel that causes the victim application to process it, leading to exhaustion and service disruption.
How to fix it
Upgrade OpenJPEG to a version that resolves the decoder issue; until available, implement input validation, sandbox image processing, or switch to an alternative library for untrusted images.
How to confirm the fix worked
Test that crafted images no longer cause excessive resource usage or crashes after applying updates; monitor process resource metrics during image decoding tests.
Typical attack path
- Craft a malicious image file targeting the decoder flaw
- Deliver the file via upload, email, or web request
- Victim application invokes the affected decoding path
- Resource exhaustion causes denial of service
How to detect it
Review application and system logs for sudden spikes in CPU or memory usage during image decoding, unexpected process crashes, or restarts triggered by image-handling components.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize patching affected OpenJPEG installations once fixes are released
- Restrict processing of untrusted images until remediation is complete
- Add resource limits and monitoring around image decoding workflows
The record
A flaw was found in OpenJPEG. A resource exhaustion can occur in the opj_t1_decode_cblks function in tcd.c through a crafted image file, causing a denial of service.
