What it actually does
Integer overflow in blendthumb_extract.cc during thumbnail extraction from .blend files can trigger program crash or arbitrary memory corruption.
Why it matters to the business
Processing untrusted Blender files may cause the application to become unavailable or behave unpredictably, disrupting content creation pipelines and requiring manual intervention.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker supplies a specially crafted .blend file that triggers the integer overflow when the thumbnail extractor parses its header; successful exploitation leads to a crash or memory corruption that can be leveraged for further attacks given the public exploit availability.
How to fix it
Upgrade Blender to the latest stable release that contains the corrected thumbnail extraction logic; if an immediate update is not possible, disable thumbnail generation for untrusted files via operating-system or application policies.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm Blender version is newer than 3.3.0 and test thumbnail extraction against known triggering files; monitor process stability under load with malformed inputs.
Typical attack path
- Attacker crafts malicious .blend file with oversized thumbnail metadata
- Victim or automated process opens or indexes the file triggering blendthumb extraction
- Integer overflow occurs during size calculation in blendthumb_extract.cc
- Process crashes or memory state is corrupted
- Attacker may chain corruption to achieve code execution or denial of service
How to detect it
Search application and system logs for repeated Blender crashes during thumbnail or file-indexing operations; inspect process dumps for signs of memory corruption when handling .blend files.
What your security team should do
- Apply the latest Blender update across all workstations and build pipelines immediately
- Restrict opening of .blend files from untrusted sources until patches are deployed
- Add file-type filtering or sandboxing for thumbnail preview services
- Review EPSS trend and exploit availability to prioritize in vulnerability management queue
The record
A flaw was found in Blender 3.3.0. An interger overflow in source/blender/blendthumb/src/blendthumb_extract.cc may lead to program crash or memory corruption.
