What it actually does

Improper neutralization of commands in OTRS System Configuration modules such as SchedulerCronTaskModule allows authenticated administrators to inject and execute arbitrary code via UnitTests module handling.

Why it matters to the business

Compromised admin accounts can lead to full server control, data exfiltration, or disruption of critical ticketing and customer service operations in affected OTRS deployments.

How an attack unfolds

An authenticated administrator accesses the system configuration interface, injects malicious commands into fields like SchedulerCronTaskModule using UnitTests modules, and triggers execution to achieve local code execution on the server.

How to fix it

Upgrade OTRS to version 7.0.45 or later for 7.0.x releases and 8.0.35 or later for 8.0.x releases; upgrade ((OTRS)) Community Edition to 6.0.35 or later. Review and sanitize all custom system configuration entries post-upgrade.

How to confirm the fix worked

Verify installed OTRS version against fixed releases; audit System Configuration for any non-standard SchedulerCronTaskModule or UnitTests entries; test that injected commands are rejected in configuration interfaces.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain valid administrator credentials
  2. Navigate to System Configuration settings
  3. Modify SchedulerCronTaskModule or related entries with injected commands via UnitTests
  4. Trigger module execution
  5. Execute arbitrary code on the host

How to detect it

Examine system configuration change logs and audit trails for modifications to SchedulerCronTaskModule or UnitTests entries; search for unexpected cron task definitions or test module activations in application logs.

What your security team should do

  • Apply the specified version upgrades immediately across all instances
  • Restrict and audit administrator privileges to the minimum required
  • Implement monitoring for configuration changes involving cron or test modules
  • Review logs for any prior suspicious configuration activity

The record

Improper Neutralization of commands allowed to be executed via OTRS System Configuration e.g. SchedulerCronTaskModule using UnitTests modules allows any authenticated attacker with admin privileges local execution of Code. This issue affects OTRS: from 7.0.X before 7.0.45, from 8.0.X before 8.0.35; ((OTRS)) Community Edition: from 6.0.1 through 6.0.34.
