What it actually does

The vulnerability causes OTRS AgentInterface and ExternalInterface to include plaintext passwords in HTTP responses returned to clients.

Why it matters to the business

Attackers can obtain user credentials, enabling account takeover, unauthorized system access, and potential further compromise of support or customer data.

How an attack unfolds

An unauthenticated attacker issues requests to the affected interfaces; the server responds with data structures that embed user passwords in clear text, which the attacker extracts from the response body.

How to fix it

Upgrade OTRS to a version newer than 8.0.37; if no fixed release is available, restrict network access to the interfaces and review password-handling code paths until an update can be applied.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the installed OTRS version is newer than 8.0.37, then test that AgentInterface and ExternalInterface responses no longer contain plaintext password values.

Typical attack path

  1. Discover a reachable OTRS 8.0.x instance
  2. Send crafted or normal requests to AgentInterface or ExternalInterface endpoints
  3. Inspect server responses for embedded plaintext password fields
  4. Capture and store recovered credentials for later use

How to detect it

Review web-server access logs and application logs for requests to AgentInterface or ExternalInterface paths; correlate with response sizes or content patterns that indicate credential leakage.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize upgrade of all OTRS 8.0.x deployments to a patched release
  • Temporarily block external access to the affected interfaces if immediate upgrade is not feasible
  • Audit logs for unusual query volumes to the named interfaces
  • Enforce password rotation for any accounts that may have been exposed

The record

A Vulnerability in OTRS AgentInterface and ExternalInterface allows the reading of plain text passwords which are send back to the client in the server response- This issue affects OTRS: from 8.0.X through 8.0.37.
