What it actually does
Reachable assertion in BitMapHook::BitMapHook at bitmaphook.cpp causes process termination when a specially crafted image is processed by libjpeg.
Why it matters to the business
Applications relying on libjpeg for image handling can be forced offline or disrupted by opening malicious files, leading to service outages and degraded availability with no official patches listed.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker creates a malformed image file that reaches the assertion in BitMapHook when decoded; the file is delivered to a target application using the vulnerable libjpeg, and opening or processing it triggers the assertion failure and immediate crash. Public exploit code is available.
How to fix it
No fixed versions are published; replace or wrap libjpeg usage to reject untrusted images, implement sandboxing around image decoding, or migrate to a maintained fork that removes the reachable assertion.
How to confirm the fix worked
Test image processing paths with known triggering files to confirm the assertion is no longer reachable; monitor application logs for abrupt terminations during image handling.
Typical attack path
- Craft a malformed image file that triggers the assertion in bitmaphook.cpp
- Deliver the file to the target via email, web upload, or other untrusted input channel
- Victim application opens or processes the file using vulnerable libjpeg
- Assertion failure causes immediate denial of service
How to detect it
Search application and system logs for abrupt terminations or assertion failures originating from bitmaphook.cpp during image processing; correlate with file open events involving JPEG or bitmap content.
- assertion failed.*bitmaphook.cpp
- BitMapHook::BitMapHook
What your security team should do
- Treat all image inputs as untrusted and isolate decoding in separate processes
- Disable or restrict libjpeg-based image features where possible until a patched library is adopted
- Add runtime monitoring for unexpected process exits during image operations
The record
libjpeg commit db33a6e was discovered to contain a reachable assertion via BitMapHook::BitMapHook at bitmaphook.cpp. This vulnerability allows attackers to cause a Denial of Service (DoS) via a crafted file.
