What it actually does
A segmentation fault occurs in HuffmanDecoder::Get within libjpeg when processing a crafted input file, resulting in an application crash and denial of service.
Why it matters to the business
Services handling image files on legacy Ubuntu 14.04 systems using affected OpenJDK packages can experience unexpected downtime from crafted inputs, with elevated risk due to the age of the packages and lack of ongoing support.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker prepares a malicious JPEG file that triggers the segfault in the vulnerable Huffman decoder and supplies it to any application using the affected libjpeg code in OpenJDK on Ubuntu 14.04, causing the target process to terminate.
How to fix it
Upgrade openjdk-7 on Ubuntu 14.04 to version 7u55-2.4.7-1ubuntu1 and openjdk-6 to version 6b31-1.13.3-1ubuntu1. Migrate away from the unsupported Ubuntu 14.04 release.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm installed package versions match the listed fixed releases and attempt processing of a known trigger file in a test environment to verify absence of the crash.
Typical attack path
- Locate services or applications that accept and process JPEG files using the vulnerable OpenJDK packages
- Generate or obtain a crafted JPEG that triggers the HuffmanDecoder segmentation fault
- Deliver the file through supported input channels such as uploads or network requests
- Cause the application to parse the file and induce the crash
How to detect it
Inspect application and system logs for segmentation fault entries tied to image decoding or libjpeg calls, especially following receipt of files from external sources.
What your security team should do
- Apply the listed package updates on any remaining Ubuntu 14.04 systems
- Retire or upgrade legacy Ubuntu 14.04 deployments
- Add file-type validation and sandboxing for image processing workflows
- Review application crash logs for recurring segmentation faults during image handling
The record
libjpeg commit 281daa9 was discovered to contain a segmentation fault via HuffmanDecoder::Get at huffmandecoder.hpp. This vulnerability allows attackers to cause a Denial of Service (DoS) via a crafted file.
