What it actually does
Multiple memory safety issues in the browser engine that can result in memory corruption, enabling arbitrary code execution when a malicious page is rendered.
Why it matters to the business
Attackers could gain full control of affected user systems through a compromised browser, leading to data theft, ransomware deployment, or further network compromise until systems are updated.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker crafts a specially formed webpage that triggers one or more of the memory corruption bugs during rendering in a vulnerable browser version; with sufficient effort the corruption can be turned into remote code execution.
How to fix it
Upgrade Mozilla Firefox to version 115 or later on all systems.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify installed Firefox version is 115 or higher via about:support or enterprise inventory tools; confirm no vulnerable instances remain in the environment.
Typical attack path
- Identify or create a malicious webpage that triggers memory safety bugs
- Host the page on an attacker-controlled domain
- Deliver the link via phishing email, malicious advertisement, or compromised site
- Victim visits the page in an unpatched browser
- Memory corruption leads to arbitrary code execution
How to detect it
Examine browser process crash logs and telemetry for unexpected memory corruption events; review web proxy and endpoint logs for visits to suspected malicious domains around the time of any anomalous browser behavior.
What your security team should do
- Immediately deploy Firefox 115 or newer across the organization
- Block or restrict use of unsupported browser versions through policy
- Review browser crash reports for signs of memory corruption
The record
Memory safety bugs present in Firefox 114. Some of these bugs showed evidence of memory corruption and we presume that with enough effort some of these could have been exploited to run arbitrary code. This vulnerability affects Firefox < 115.
