What it actually does
Insufficient validation in the Drag and Drop API allows creation of shortcuts to local system files via social engineering, enabling arbitrary code execution.
Why it matters to the business
Attackers could gain code execution on affected systems leading to potential data compromise or malware deployment; low exploit likelihood with no KEV listing or ransomware association and stable low EPSS over 1199 days since publication.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker crafts a social engineering scenario to convince a user to perform a drag-and-drop action that exploits the validation flaw, resulting in a shortcut to sensitive local files that can be used to run arbitrary code.
How to fix it
Upgrade affected Firefox installations to version 115 or later. For charmbracelet/soft-serve update to commit 407c4ec72d1006cee1ff8c1775e5bcc091c2bc89.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm Firefox version is at least 115; verify soft-serve deployment references commit 407c4ec72d1006cee1ff8c1775e5bcc091c2bc89 and test drag-and-drop scenarios no longer permit unauthorized shortcuts.
Typical attack path
- Deliver social engineering lures to target users
- Trick user into drag-and-drop interaction with attacker-controlled content
- Abuse insufficient validation to create shortcut to local system files
- Leverage shortcut for arbitrary code execution
How to detect it
Review browser process logs and user activity for unexpected shortcut creations or drag-and-drop events leading to file system access; no widespread threat actor campaigns noted.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize patching Firefox to 115+ across all endpoints due to code execution potential
- Update charmbracelet/soft-serve to the specified commit in all deployments
- Educate users on recognizing social engineering attempts involving file interactions
- Monitor for any future EPSS increases despite current stability
The record
Insufficient validation in the Drag and Drop API in conjunction with social engineering, may have allowed an attacker to trick end-users into creating a shortcut to local system files. This could have been leveraged to execute arbitrary code. This vulnerability affects Firefox < 115.
