A timing flaw in older versions of Firefox and Thunderbird could let attackers trick people into accepting bad security certificates by making clicks land in the wrong place at the wrong moment.

What it actually does
Race condition in TLS error page rendering allows user clicks intended for a preceding page to activate the certificate override button before the error page display stabilizes.
Why it matters to the business
Users on unpatched browsers may be tricked into accepting invalid certificates, enabling man-in-the-middle attacks or phishing that bypasses browser security warnings and exposes credentials or data.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker crafts a page that solicits rapid clicks in specific screen locations, then immediately navigates the tab to a site presenting a certificate error while simultaneously loading heavy content to delay rendering; the clicks land on the override button during the brief window before the activation delay would normally protect it.
How to fix it
Upgrade Firefox to version 114 or later, Firefox ESR to 102.12 or later, and Thunderbird to 102.12 or later. Until updates can be applied, avoid overriding certificate warnings and consider enterprise policies that disable the override button entirely.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm installed versions meet or exceed the fixed releases listed above; test by visiting a site with an invalid certificate and verifying that the error page enforces the standard activation delay before the override button becomes responsive.
Typical attack path
- Host a malicious page that prompts repeated user interaction in targeted coordinates
- Trigger navigation to a target site that returns an invalid TLS certificate
- Simultaneously busy the renderer with computationally intensive content
- Intercept the resulting clicks on the certificate error override button
- Establish a connection that the victim now trusts despite the certificate mismatch
How to detect it
Browser exploitation of this issue leaves no distinctive persistent artifacts; review browser history and certificate exception logs for unexpected overrides on high-risk sites immediately following visits to untrusted pages.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize deployment of the fixed browser versions across all managed endpoints within the next patching cycle
- Enable automatic updates where feasible to reduce future exposure windows
- Review and enforce organizational policies that prevent users from overriding certificate errors on untrusted sites
The record
The error page for sites with invalid TLS certificates was missing the activation-delay Firefox uses to protect prompts and permission dialogs from attacks that exploit human response time delays. If a malicious page elicited user clicks in precise locations immediately before navigating to a site with a certificate error and made the renderer extremely busy at the same time, it could create a gap between when the error page was loaded and when the display actually refreshed. With the right timing the elicited clicks could land in that gap and activate the button that overrides the certificate error for that site. This vulnerability affects Firefox ESR < 102.12, Firefox < 114, and Thunderbird < 102.12.
