What it actually does
Memory corruption flaws in the browser engine that can be triggered to execute arbitrary code.
Why it matters to the business
Attackers could gain full control of a user's system by delivering malicious web content, resulting in data theft, credential compromise, or malware deployment across the organization.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker crafts a malicious webpage that exploits one of the memory safety issues; when a user visits the page with a vulnerable browser, the corruption allows the attacker to run arbitrary code in the browser process.
How to fix it
Upgrade Firefox to version 113 or later, Firefox ESR to 102.11 or later, and Thunderbird to 102.11 or later. Apply updates through the application's built-in updater or package manager as soon as they become available.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify installed versions match or exceed the fixed releases (Firefox >= 113, ESR >= 102.11, Thunderbird >= 102.11) via the about:support page or equivalent command-line query; re-scan endpoints after deployment.
Typical attack path
- Attacker prepares and hosts a webpage containing a trigger for the memory corruption.
- Victim is lured to the page via phishing, compromised site, or drive-by download.
- Browser processes the crafted content and triggers the memory safety bug.
- Corruption is leveraged to achieve code execution within the browser sandbox or process.
- Attacker installs persistence, exfiltrates data, or pivots to other systems.
How to detect it
Examine web proxy and browser process logs for visits to previously unknown domains followed by abnormal crashes or child process spawns; correlate with EDR telemetry showing unexpected code injection into browser processes.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize patching all instances of the affected products within the next 48 hours.
- Enable automatic updates where feasible and monitor for any delayed rollout packages.
- Review browser extension and plugin inventories for additional attack surface.
- Update network and endpoint detection rules to flag unusual browser process behavior.
The record
Memory safety bugs present in Firefox 112 and Firefox ESR 102.10. Some of these bugs showed evidence of memory corruption and we presume that with enough effort some of these could have been exploited to run arbitrary code. This vulnerability affects Firefox < 113, Firefox ESR < 102.11, and Thunderbird < 102.11.
