What it actually does
Stack overflow in ecma_op_function_construct leads to application crash via uncontrolled recursion or excessive stack allocation during function object construction.
Why it matters to the business
Local users can trigger denial of service by causing the application to crash, interrupting availability of services that depend on the affected component; the low exploitability and lack of remote vector limit widespread operational disruption.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access supplies crafted input that reaches the ecma_op_function_construct path, overflowing the stack and crashing the process; no remote code execution or privilege escalation is indicated by the flaw details.
How to fix it
Upgrade gogs/gogs (GIT) to commit 38aff73251cc46ced96dd608dab6190415032a82 or later; rebuild from the patched source and redeploy the updated binary.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the running binary or source tree contains commit 38aff73251cc46ced96dd608dab6190415032a82; attempt reproduction of the stack overflow with the original triggering input to verify the crash is no longer possible.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local access to a system running the vulnerable software
- Craft input that exercises function construction in the affected component
- Trigger the stack overflow to induce a crash
How to detect it
Search application and system logs for unexpected process terminations or stack overflow signals around the time of function construction operations; correlate with local user activity that exercises the affected code path.
What your security team should do
- Apply the fixed commit immediately to eliminate the crash vector
- Monitor for local crash reports in application logs as a temporary detection measure
- Review local access controls to reduce the attack surface for memory-corruption issues
