What it actually does
The flaw triggers a segmentation violation in the JerryScript engine when processing crafted input via the build/bin/jerry component, resulting in an immediate process crash.
Why it matters to the business
Applications or services relying on this JavaScript engine can be forced offline by a local user, interrupting any workloads that depend on script execution.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker supplies a specially crafted JavaScript file or command-line input that reaches the vulnerable code path in the engine; when the binary processes the input the segmentation violation occurs and the process terminates.
How to fix it
Upgrade to a JerryScript build newer than commit 1a2c047 or apply any subsequent patches that address the segmentation violation; if no fixed release is available, restrict execution of untrusted scripts and consider alternative engines.
How to confirm the fix worked
Run the updated binary against the original proof-of-concept input and confirm the segmentation violation no longer occurs; re-test with known crashing cases and monitor process stability under load.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local access to a system running the vulnerable JerryScript binary
- Craft or obtain a JavaScript payload that triggers the segmentation violation
- Invoke the binary with the malicious input via command line or file
- Observe process crash and denial of service
How to detect it
Review process crash logs, core dumps, or system event records for unexpected terminations of the jerry binary when handling JavaScript files; correlate with recent file creation or execution events involving untrusted scripts.
What your security team should do
- Inventory all deployments that embed or invoke the JerryScript engine
- Prioritize upgrade or replacement of affected instances
- Implement application sandboxing or input validation to reduce crash surface until patched
- Monitor upstream repository for any later fixes
