Schedule a fix SSVC: Track

Older versions of Firefox and Thunderbird contain flaws that could let a criminal take over a user's computer simply by getting them to visit a website or open an email.

What it actually does

Multiple memory safety bugs in the browser and mail client engines that manifest as memory corruption, enabling potential arbitrary code execution with sufficient attacker effort.

Why it matters to the business

Compromise of end-user devices can lead to theft of credentials and data, deployment of malware, or remote control of systems across an organization, increasing incident response costs especially for widely deployed browser and email clients.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker crafts malicious web content or email attachments that trigger the memory corruption paths during rendering or parsing; with enough effort this can be turned into arbitrary code execution inside the vulnerable process.

How to fix it

Upgrade Firefox to 112 or later, Firefox ESR to 102.10 or later, Thunderbird to 102.10 or later, Focus for Android to 112 or later, and Firefox for Android to 112 or later; remove or isolate any remaining older instances.

How to confirm the fix worked

Inventory installed versions of all listed Mozilla products and confirm none are below the fixed releases; re-scan after patching to verify exposure has been eliminated.

Typical attack path

  1. Identify users running vulnerable Firefox, ESR, Focus, Thunderbird, or Android variants
  2. Host or deliver crafted web page or email that reaches the memory-unsafe code paths
  3. Trigger memory corruption via normal browsing or mail handling
  4. Escalate to arbitrary code execution and payload deployment

How to detect it

Review browser and mail client crash logs, process creation events, and network telemetry for unexpected child processes or outbound connections immediately following web or email activity on vulnerable versions.

What your security team should do

  • Immediately deploy updates to all affected Mozilla products
  • Block or sandbox execution of known vulnerable versions via enterprise policy
  • Monitor endpoint telemetry for post-update stability and anomalous crashes

The record

Memory safety bugs present in Firefox 111 and Firefox ESR 102.9. Some of these bugs showed evidence of memory corruption and we presume that with enough effort some of these could have been exploited to run arbitrary code. This vulnerability affects Firefox < 112, Focus for Android < 112, Firefox ESR < 102.10, Firefox for Android < 112, and Thunderbird < 102.10.
