What it actually does
Invalid downcast from nsTextNode to SVGElement triggers undefined behavior and memory corruption in the rendering engine.
Why it matters to the business
Remote attackers can achieve arbitrary code execution or cause browser crashes on unpatched systems, risking data theft, malware deployment, and operational disruption for users of affected Mozilla products.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker crafts a malicious web page containing specially formed content that forces the browser to perform the invalid cast during rendering; the resulting memory corruption is then leveraged to execute attacker-controlled code within the browser process.
How to fix it
Upgrade Firefox to version 110 or later, Firefox ESR to 102.8 or later, and Thunderbird to 102.8 or later. Apply updates through official Mozilla channels as soon as they become available.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify installed browser versions against the fixed releases; confirm that the vulnerable code paths have been removed by reviewing release notes or performing version checks via about:support.
Typical attack path
- Prepare malicious HTML/SVG content that triggers the downcast flaw
- Host the content on a web server or deliver via phishing/email
- Victim loads the page in an affected browser version
- Memory corruption occurs and is exploited for code execution or sandbox escape
How to detect it
Review browser crash logs and telemetry for anomalies in rendering or SVG handling; correlate with web proxy logs showing visits to suspicious domains around the time of crashes.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize patching all instances of Firefox, Firefox ESR, and Thunderbird to the fixed releases
- Block known malicious domains and monitor for unusual browser crash reports
- Educate users on avoiding untrusted links until patches are deployed
The record
An invalid downcast from <code>nsTextNode</code> to <code>SVGElement</code> could have lead to undefined behavior. This vulnerability affects Firefox < 110, Thunderbird < 102.8, and Firefox ESR < 102.8.
