What it actually does
The flaw exposes passwords in Webconf log files on the appliance, enabling any local user with read access to retrieve them directly from disk.
Why it matters to the business
Local accounts on the appliance can obtain credentials that may be reused elsewhere, increasing the chance of broader unauthorized access and data exposure without external network activity.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with an existing local account on the Checkmk Appliance locates the Webconf log files, opens them with standard file-reading tools, and extracts any passwords that were written in plaintext.
How to fix it
Upgrade Tribe29 Checkmk Appliance firmware to version 1.6.4 or newer so that passwords are no longer written to log files.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the running firmware version is 1.6.4 or later; inspect current log files for absence of credential strings and verify that new log entries no longer contain passwords.
Typical attack path
- Gain or use existing local shell or user account on the appliance
- Navigate to the Webconf log directory
- Read log files containing credential material
How to detect it
Review appliance authentication and file-access logs for unexpected reads of Webconf log paths; search historical logs for strings that resemble stored passwords or credential formats.
What your security team should do
- Apply the 1.6.4 firmware update across all appliances
- Restrict local log directory permissions to the minimum required accounts
- Audit existing logs for previously exposed credentials and rotate any found passwords
The record
Sensitive data exposure in Webconf in Tribe29 Checkmk Appliance before 1.6.4 allows local attacker to retrieve passwords via reading log files.
