What it actually does

The flaw permits a low-privileged local attacker to read a limited subset of VirtualBox-accessible data, with the attack able to affect additional products due to scope change.

Why it matters to the business

Attackers who already have local login rights on a virtualization host can obtain sensitive configuration or operational data, potentially exposing information across multiple systems or products.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker with low-privileged local access on the host running VirtualBox triggers the flaw through normal execution paths to bypass isolation boundaries and read a subset of otherwise inaccessible data.

How to fix it

Upgrade Oracle VM VirtualBox to version 6.1.42 or 7.0.6 (or later) on all affected hosts.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the running VirtualBox version meets or exceeds the fixed releases and attempt local low-privileged data access tests to verify isolation remains intact.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain low-privileged local login on the host where VirtualBox runs
  2. Identify the installed VirtualBox version
  3. Execute a local process or command that reaches the vulnerable core component
  4. Read the exposed subset of data

How to detect it

Review host authentication and process execution logs for low-privileged sessions interacting with VirtualBox core components around the time of suspected access.

What your security team should do

  • Apply the fixed VirtualBox versions immediately on all hosts
  • Restrict local logons to virtualization hosts to the minimum necessary accounts
  • Audit local access rights on hosts running VirtualBox

The record

Vulnerability in the Oracle VM VirtualBox product of Oracle Virtualization (component: Core). Supported versions that are affected are Prior to 6.1.42 and prior to 7.0.6. Easily exploitable vulnerability allows low privileged attacker with logon to the infrastructure where Oracle VM VirtualBox executes to compromise Oracle VM VirtualBox. While the vulnerability is in Oracle VM VirtualBox, attacks may significantly impact additional products (scope change). Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in unauthorized read access to a subset of Oracle VM VirtualBox accessible data. CVSS 3.1 Base Score 3.8 (Confidentiality impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:L/I:N/A:N).
