What it actually does

The vulnerability in the core component permits an unauthenticated network attacker to achieve remote code execution, resulting in full takeover of the VirtualBox process.

Why it matters to the business

Successful exploitation can lead to complete compromise of virtualized environments, disrupting operations and exposing data across host and guest systems; low EPSS and lack of known exploitation reduce urgency but do not eliminate the need for patching on exposed deployments.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker with network access sends specially crafted traffic via multiple protocols to trigger the flaw in the core component under high attack complexity conditions, achieving code execution and full application takeover.

How to fix it

Upgrade Oracle VM VirtualBox to version 6.1.42 or later and 7.0.6 or later; apply the referenced commit updates where applicable to address the core component issue.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm installed versions meet or exceed the fixed releases, review network exposure of management interfaces, and validate that the vulnerability is no longer present through version checks and restricted access testing.

Typical attack path

  1. Scan for exposed VirtualBox instances accepting connections on supported protocols
  2. Craft and transmit malicious payloads to exploit the core component flaw
  3. Achieve remote code execution leading to takeover of the VirtualBox process

How to detect it

Review network traffic logs for anomalous connections to VirtualBox services, inspect system and application logs for unexpected core component activity or crashes, and search for indicators of unauthorized process execution.

What your security team should do

  • Apply the specified version upgrades immediately on all affected installations
  • Restrict network access to VirtualBox instances using firewalls or access controls
  • Monitor for post-patch anomalies in process behavior and logs

The record

Vulnerability in the Oracle VM VirtualBox product of Oracle Virtualization (component: Core). Supported versions that are affected are Prior to 6.1.42 and prior to 7.0.6. Difficult to exploit vulnerability allows unauthenticated attacker with network access via multiple protocols to compromise Oracle VM VirtualBox. Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in takeover of Oracle VM VirtualBox. CVSS 3.1 Base Score 8.1 (Confidentiality, Integrity and Availability impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H).
