What it actually does

Improper input validation in Ticket Actions modules permits injection and execution of arbitrary client-side scripts in the context of other users' sessions.

Why it matters to the business

Attackers can steal session tokens, perform actions on behalf of agents or customers, or deface ticket interfaces, leading to unauthorized access to sensitive support data and potential account takeover in customer service workflows.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker crafts a malicious payload, submits it through ticket action fields that lack sanitization, and waits for a privileged user to view the affected ticket; the script then executes in the victim's browser.

How to fix it

Upgrade OTRS to 7.0.42 or later and ((OTRS)) Community Edition to a version beyond 6.0.34; apply vendor patches that enforce proper output encoding in all Ticket Actions modules.

How to confirm the fix worked

Review release notes for the fixed versions, retest ticket action forms with known XSS test vectors to confirm scripts are no longer executed, and scan for residual unsanitized reflection points.

Typical attack path

  1. Identify a ticket action input field that reflects user-supplied data without escaping.
  2. Inject a script payload (e.g., via a crafted ticket update or comment).
  3. Lure or wait for an authenticated user or agent to open the ticket.
  4. Script executes to exfiltrate cookies, perform CSRF actions, or display fake content.

How to detect it

Search web server and application logs for ticket action requests containing script tags, event handlers, or encoded JavaScript; inspect browser developer tools or proxy histories for unexpected script execution on ticket view pages.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize upgrade of all OTRS instances to the stated fixed releases within the next maintenance window.
  • Implement web application firewall rules that block common XSS patterns targeting ticket modules until patches are applied.
  • Conduct a code review of any custom Ticket Actions extensions for similar input handling issues.
