What it actually does
NULL pointer dereference in nilfs_palloc_commit_free_entry() during nilfs2 segment construction when DAT metadata corruption causes req->pr_desc_bh and req->pr_bitmap_bh to be NULL, resulting in a general protection fault and kernel crash.
Why it matters to the business
Unexpected system crashes and downtime on Linux systems using the nilfs2 filesystem, with potential for data inconsistency during metadata operations; low urgency given age and lack of KEV status but still requires patching on affected kernels.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker supplies a corrupted nilfs2 image or triggers conditions where DAT metadata leads to uninitialized blocknr values; during b-tree propagation and segment construction in the segctord thread, nilfs_dat_commit_free() calls the vulnerable function without valid buffer heads, crashing the kernel. Threat actors in espionage and financially motivated campaigns have targeted similar Linux kernel resource handling flaws.
How to fix it
Update the Linux kernel to a version containing commit 2f2c59506ae39496588ceb8b88bdbdbaed895d63 or 7dac0e214a344447a2a8ea7414188c38c6a61a6e in the stable tree; rebuild and reboot with the patched kernel. Disable nilfs2 if unused.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify kernel source contains the NULL check on req->pr_desc_bh and req->pr_bitmap_bh in nilfs_dat_commit_free(); confirm no crash occurs when mounting test images with simulated DAT corruption; check git log for the listed commit hashes.
Typical attack path
- Prepare or obtain a nilfs2 filesystem image with corrupted DAT metadata
- Mount the image on a vulnerable Linux kernel
- Trigger file operations that cause b-tree updates and segment construction
- nilfs_segctor_thread invokes nilfs_dat_commit_end without valid buffer heads
- nilfs_palloc_commit_free_entry dereferences NULL leading to crash
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and dmesg for stack traces containing nilfs_palloc_commit_free_entry, nilfs_dat_commit_free, segctord thread, and general protection fault at alloc.c:608; correlate with mounts of nilfs2 volumes.
- nilfs_palloc_commit_free_entry+0xe5/0x6b0
- NILFS (loop0): segctord starting
- KASAN: null-ptr-deref in range [0x0000000000000010-0x0000000000000017]
- nilfs_dat_commit_end+0x464/0x5f0
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel upgrades on any systems exposing nilfs2 volumes within 30 days
- Add monitoring for kernel oops and general protection faults involving nilfs functions
- Audit for nilfs2 usage across the fleet and restrict mounting of untrusted images
- Review EPSS trend and threat actor reports for similar kernel flaws quarterly

If DAT metadata file is corrupted on disk, there is a case where req->pr_desc_bh is NULL and blocknr is 0 at nilfs_dat_commit_end() during a b-tree operation that cascadingly updates ancestor nodes of the b-tree, because nilfs_dat_commit_alloc() for a lower level block can initialize the blocknr on the same DAT entry between nilfs_dat_prepare_end() and nilfs_dat_commit_end(). If this happens, nilfs_dat_commit_end() calls nilfs_dat_commit_free() without valid buffer heads in req->pr_desc_bh and req->pr_bitmap_bh, and causes the NULL pointer dereference above in nilfs_palloc_commit_free_entry() function, which leads to a crash. Fix this by adding a NULL check on req->pr_desc_bh and req->pr_bitmap_bh before nilfs_palloc_commit_free_entry() in nilfs_dat_commit_free(). This also calls nilfs_error() in that case to notify that there is a fatal flaw in the filesystem metadata and prevent further operations.
