What it actually does
Memory leak in raydium_i2c_send() where tx_buf allocated for BANK_SWITCH commands is never freed regardless of success or failure, leaving unreferenced kernel objects.
Why it matters to the business
Gradual memory exhaustion on affected Linux systems using Raydium I2C touchscreens can lead to degraded performance, instability, or denial of service over extended operation or repeated device probing.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access or the ability to trigger I2C device probe paths (for example via crafted device trees or mock devices) can cause repeated allocations in raydium_i2c_initialize without corresponding frees, consuming kernel memory; listed threat actors have been associated with broader Linux kernel resource issues but no public exploitation of this specific leak is recorded.
How to fix it
Update the Linux kernel to a version containing commit a82869ac52f3d9db4b2cf8fd41edc2dee7a75a61 (or equivalent 4a98568021b8e289345c7f526ccbd7ed732cf286 in downstream trees) which ensures tx_buf is freed after every BANK_SWITCH operation.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm kernel source contains the referenced commit, run kmemleak scanning during raydium_ts_i2c probe and initialization, and verify no unreferenced objects remain after BANK_SWITCH sequences.
Typical attack path
- Gain ability to trigger I2C device attachment or driver probe on target system
- Cause raydium_i2c_probe to invoke raydium_i2c_initialize
- Execute BANK_SWITCH command path in raydium_i2c_send repeatedly
- Accumulate unreferenced kmalloc allocations leading to memory pressure
How to detect it
Enable kmemleak and inspect for unreferenced objects with backtraces containing raydium_i2c_send and raydium_i2c_initialize; review kernel logs for repeated I2C probe activity on raydium devices; no widespread in-the-wild indicators have been published.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel upgrade on systems exposing the raydium_i2c_ts driver within the next maintenance window
- Monitor EPSS and KEV updates for any change in exploitability signals
- Limit untrusted I2C device attachment where feasible until patched
