What it actually does
Uninitialized stack memory containing potentially sensitive kernel data is sent in the VF mailbox reset message when no MAC address is assigned, allowing information disclosure to the guest VM.
Why it matters to the business
Virtualized environments using affected network drivers face risk of confidential kernel memory exposure to untrusted VMs, increasing data breach potential; low exploit probability but present in widely deployed Linux systems with 726 days of exposure.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker controlling or observing a VF in a virtualized setup triggers a VF reset when no MAC is assigned; the igb driver sends uninitialized stack data in the mailbox message, leaking kernel memory contents to the VM. Threat actors noted in Linux kernel uninitialized resource and related campaigns could leverage this for reconnaissance or further attacks.
How to fix it
Update to fixed commit ee1afba003d33667981e098c83295f599d88439c in the librenms/librenms GIT repository (or equivalent kernel patch initializing the mailbox buffer to zero). Apply vendor updates for affected Linux kernel versions containing the igb driver fix.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the patch is present by inspecting the igb mailbox initialization code for explicit zeroing of the message buffer before transmission; test VF reset scenarios with unassigned MAC addresses to verify no uninitialized data is sent.
Typical attack path
- Gain access to a virtual function (VF) in an igb-based SR-IOV setup
- Trigger VF reset operation without an assigned MAC address
- Receive the uninitialized mailbox message containing stack data from the host kernel
- Extract sensitive kernel memory contents from the leaked message
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and hypervisor traces for igb VF reset events; look for unexpected data patterns in mailbox communications between host and VM; review threat actor reports on Linux kernel information disclosure for related indicators.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize patching systems with igb SR-IOV virtualization configurations due to information disclosure risk
- Monitor EPSS and threat actor activity around Linux kernel uninitialized resource issues for any rise in exploitation
- Review virtualization setups to ensure MAC assignment occurs before VF resets where possible
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: igb: Initialize mailbox message for VF reset When a MAC address is not assigned to the VF, that portion of the message sent to the VF is not set. The memory, however, is allocated from the stack meaning that information may be leaked to the VM. Initialize the message buffer to 0 so that no information is passed to the VM in this case.
