What it actually does
The flaw causes the UDF extent tree header to be corrupted instead of properly discarding a preallocation extent when that extent is the first entry in its block, resulting in memory corruption within the kernel's filesystem handling code.
Why it matters to the business
Linux systems that process UDF-formatted storage can experience kernel instability, crashes, or potential unauthorized code execution, leading to downtime, data loss risks, and increased operational overhead especially on servers or embedded devices handling optical or removable media.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker prepares a specially crafted UDF image containing preallocation extents positioned at indirect block boundaries, then causes the vulnerable kernel to mount and access the image, triggering the faulty discard logic that overwrites the extent tree header and corrupts kernel memory structures.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to the fixed commit c8b6fa4511a7900db9fb0353b630d4d2ed1ba99c or later stable releases containing the udf_delete_aext change; rebuild and deploy updated kernel packages across affected systems.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify the applied kernel contains commit c8b6fa4511a7900db9fb0353b630d4d2ed1ba99c, then test UDF mount and preallocation discard scenarios on sample images to confirm absence of header corruption.
Typical attack path
- Create or obtain a malicious UDF filesystem image with crafted preallocation extents at block boundaries
- Mount the image on a vulnerable Linux kernel
- Perform filesystem operations that invoke preallocation discarding at an indirect extent boundary
- Trigger header corruption leading to memory corruption or crash
How to detect it
Review kernel logs for UDF-related oops or panic messages mentioning extent tree header corruption or calls to udf_delete_aext; correlate with recent mounts of external or optical media.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on all systems that may mount UDF media
- Restrict untrusted UDF image mounting via policy or SELinux/AppArmor profiles
- Monitor kernel update channels for related stable backports
- Audit systems for legacy UDF usage and migrate to modern filesystems where feasible
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: udf: Fix preallocation discarding at indirect extent boundary When preallocation extent is the first one in the extent block, the code would corrupt extent tree header instead. Fix the problem and use udf_delete_aext() for deleting extent to avoid some code duplication.
