What it actually does
Memory corruption bugs in the browser engine that can be exploited to execute arbitrary code.
Why it matters to the business
Attackers could gain full control of affected user systems after visiting malicious sites, risking data theft and malware deployment; the issue is old with no known active exploitation campaigns.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker hosts a specially crafted web page that triggers one of the memory safety issues when rendered in an unpatched browser, leading to memory corruption that is turned into code execution with no user interaction beyond loading the page.
How to fix it
Upgrade Mozilla Firefox to version 106 or later.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify the installed Firefox version is 106 or higher and confirm no crash reports or memory-related anomalies are present in browser logs.
Typical attack path
- Attacker prepares a malicious webpage exploiting a memory corruption flaw.
- Victim using vulnerable Firefox visits the page.
- Page rendering triggers memory corruption.
- Attacker achieves arbitrary code execution in the browser process.
How to detect it
Examine browser crash reports and memory dumps for signs of corruption; review web proxy or firewall logs for visits to suspicious domains around the time of any anomalous browser behavior.
What your security team should do
- Ensure all Firefox installations are updated to version 106 or newer.
- Monitor for any new exploit maturity indicators or EPSS increases.
- Review browser update policies to prevent use of unsupported versions.
The record
Mozilla developers Timothy Nikkel, Ashley Hale, and the Mozilla Fuzzing Team reported memory safety bugs present in Firefox 105. Some of these bugs showed evidence of memory corruption and we presume that with enough effort some of these could have been exploited to run arbitrary code. This vulnerability affects Firefox < 106.
