What it actually does

The vulnerability is a use-after-free in the SVG image handling code when the Refresh Driver is destroyed at an inopportune time, leading to memory corruption that can be leveraged for arbitrary code execution.

Why it matters to the business

Attackers could gain full control over a user's browser and potentially the underlying system by exploiting a crafted web page, risking data theft and unauthorized access across widely deployed Firefox installations.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker serves a malicious webpage containing SVG content designed to trigger the use-after-free condition during refresh driver destruction, allowing memory manipulation to execute arbitrary code in the browser process.

How to fix it

Upgrade Mozilla Firefox to version 106 or later to resolve the use-after-free in SVG image handling.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm installed Firefox version is 106 or higher and review browser release notes confirming inclusion of the SVG refresh driver fix.

Typical attack path

  1. Deliver malicious SVG content via web page
  2. Trigger refresh driver destruction at specific timing
  3. Exploit use-after-free for memory corruption
  4. Achieve arbitrary code execution within the browser

How to detect it

Review browser crash logs for SVG-related memory errors and monitor for unexpected process terminations after rendering web content.

What your security team should do

  • Immediately update all Firefox deployments to version 106 or newer
  • Scan environments for any remaining instances below version 106
  • Monitor crash reports and anomalous browser behavior for residual risk

The record

A potential use-after-free vulnerability existed in SVG Images if the Refresh Driver was destroyed at an inopportune time. This could have lead to memory corruption or a potentially exploitable crash. *Note*: This advisory was added on December 13th, 2022 after discovering it was inadvertently left out of the original advisory. The fix was included in the original release of Firefox 106. This vulnerability affects Firefox < 106.
