CVE-2022-45412

What it actually does

When resolving a symlink such as file:///proc/self/fd/1, an error message may be produced where the symlink was resolved to a string containing uninitialized memory in the buffer. This bug only affects Unix-based operating systems (Android, Linux, MacOS).

Potential leakage of sensitive memory contents on Unix-based systems could expose confidential data, increasing risk of further compromise in environments running affected browser or email clients.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker supplies input triggering symlink resolution (e.g., a crafted file:/// URL) that causes the application to generate an error message containing uninitialized memory, which may then be observed or exfiltrated by the attacker.

How to fix it

Upgrade Firefox ESR to 102.5 or later, Thunderbird to 102.5 or later, and Firefox to 107 or later. For tensorflow/tensorflow (GIT) instances, apply the fix in commit da0d65cdc1270038e72157ba35bf74b85d9bda11.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm installed versions meet or exceed the fixed releases; attempt symlink resolution with file:///proc/self/fd/1 and verify no uninitialized memory appears in error output.

1. Deliver malicious input or link that triggers symlink resolution
2. Force error condition during resolution of file:///proc/self/fd/* path
3. Capture resulting error message containing uninitialized memory
4. Parse leaked buffer contents for sensitive data

How to detect it

Inspect application and system logs for error messages generated during symlink resolution of /proc/self/fd paths; look for unexpected binary or random data in those messages on Unix hosts.
