What it actually does
The flaw permits unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary SQL statements via the mib_name parameter on the Manage MIBs page, bypassing input sanitization and allowing direct interaction with the backend database for data retrieval, modification, or deletion.
Why it matters to the business
Compromise can expose sensitive network monitoring data, enable lateral movement into monitored infrastructure, and disrupt operational visibility, resulting in prolonged downtime or regulatory exposure for organizations relying on Nagios XI for IT oversight.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker locates the unauthenticated Manage MIBs endpoint, supplies a crafted mib_name value containing SQL metacharacters or subqueries, and the unsanitized input is concatenated directly into database queries, executing attacker-controlled commands that may return data or alter records.
How to fix it
Upgrade Nagios XI to the latest available release that resolves the mib_name handling issue; until then, place the management interface behind authenticated proxies, enforce strict input validation at the WAF layer, and disable or restrict the Manage MIBs functionality for untrusted users.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the deployed Nagios XI version exceeds 5.8.6, replay known injection test cases against mib_name and verify absence of database error leakage or unexpected query results, and review changelog entries for SQL parameterization fixes.
Typical attack path
- Discover the Manage MIBs page in a reachable Nagios XI instance
- Craft and URL-encode a malicious SQL payload targeting the mib_name field
- Issue an unauthenticated HTTP POST or GET request containing the payload
- Observe database responses or errors to confirm injection and exfiltrate or modify data
How to detect it
Inspect web server access logs for requests to the Manage MIBs endpoint that contain SQL keywords such as UNION, SELECT, or single quotes; correlate with database error logs showing syntax failures or unexpected query structures.
- mib_name=
- Manage MIBs
- SQL syntax error
- nagiosxi.*mibs
What your security team should do
- Immediately restrict public or untrusted access to Nagios XI administrative interfaces
- Deploy web application firewall rules blocking common SQL metacharacters in mib_name and similar parameters
- Monitor database logs for anomalous queries originating from the web application
- Schedule upgrade to a patched Nagios XI release at the earliest maintenance window
The record
Nagios XI v5.8.6 was discovered to contain a SQL injection vulnerability via the mib_name parameter at the Manage MIBs page.
