A flaw in Intel's media software development tools can let someone who already has basic access on a computer gain much greater control over that machine.

What it actually does

Improper buffer restrictions in the Intel Media SDK allow an authenticated local user to corrupt memory structures, resulting in escalation of privilege.

Why it matters to the business

Local attackers can obtain elevated system rights on affected workstations or servers, increasing the risk of data theft, persistence, or further lateral movement within the environment.

How an attack unfolds

An authenticated local user supplies specially crafted input to the Media SDK that violates buffer bounds, triggering memory corruption that the attacker leverages to execute code with higher privileges.

How to fix it

Upgrade Intel Media SDK to version 22.2.2 or later on all affected systems.

How to confirm the fix worked

Query installed Intel Media SDK version via package manager or vendor tooling and confirm it meets or exceeds 22.2.2; re-scan systems after patching.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain authenticated local access to a system running vulnerable Intel Media SDK
  2. Identify or trigger the Media SDK component through normal application usage or custom code
  3. Supply malformed data that exploits the buffer restriction flaw
  4. Escalate privileges to SYSTEM or equivalent level

How to detect it

Review local authentication and process creation logs for unexpected elevation events involving media-related binaries; correlate with application crash or memory error reports.

What your security team should do

  • Immediately inventory systems for Intel Media SDK installations
  • Schedule and apply the 22.2.2 update across all endpoints
  • Harden local access controls and monitor for unexpected privilege changes
  • Review application whitelisting to limit SDK exposure where possible

The record

Improper buffer restrictions in the Intel(R) Media SDK software before version 22.2.2 may allow an authenticated user to potentially enable escalation of privilege via local access.
