What it actually does

Incorrect calculation in the microcode keying mechanism on affected 3rd Generation Intel Xeon Scalable Processors permits a local privileged user to read sensitive processor state or data that should remain isolated.

Why it matters to the business

Attackers with administrative access on affected servers could extract confidential information such as cryptographic keys or memory contents, increasing risk of data breaches on high-value compute infrastructure.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker with root or equivalent privileges on a system using an affected Xeon processor executes specially crafted local code that triggers the flawed microcode keying path, resulting in unauthorized disclosure of protected processor data.

How to fix it

Apply the latest Intel microcode updates and corresponding server BIOS/firmware releases that correct the keying mechanism; verify the updated microcode revision is loaded after reboot. Where vendor firmware is unavailable, isolate or replace affected hardware.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the processor model against the affected list, check that the latest vendor-supplied microcode is active via CPUID or platform tools, and re-test the keying behavior under controlled conditions if test harnesses are available.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain local administrative access on a target server containing an affected 3rd Generation Xeon Scalable Processor
  2. Identify the exact processor model and current microcode revision
  3. Craft or obtain code that exercises the incorrect keying calculation
  4. Execute the code locally to leak sensitive processor state or memory
  5. Exfiltrate the disclosed information for further use

How to detect it

Review system logs and microcode loading events for unexpected processor behavior or failed integrity checks; correlate with privileged user activity around the time of suspected exposure. No public exploit artifacts are known.

What your security team should do

  • Inventory all servers for the listed Xeon Gold models and flag those without current BIOS/microcode
  • Prioritize microcode/BIOS updates on systems handling sensitive workloads
  • Restrict local administrative access to the minimum necessary personnel until patches are applied
  • Monitor vendor advisories for any subsequent microcode revisions

The record

Incorrect calculation in microcode keying mechanism for some 3rd Generation Intel(R) Xeon(R) Scalable Processors may allow a privileged user to potentially enable information disclosure via local access.
