Use-after-free in memory management allows corruption that can be leveraged for arbitrary code execution when processing untrusted web or email content.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker prepares specially crafted HTML or email content that triggers the use-after-free condition during rendering; the victim loads the content in an unpatched browser or Thunderbird client, the freed memory is reused maliciously, and attacker-controlled code executes with the privileges of the user.

How to fix it

Upgrade Firefox to version 102 or later, Firefox ESR to 91.11 or later, and Thunderbird to 102 or later or 91.11 or later; remove older installations and verify the new version is in use.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm installed versions are at or above the fixed releases listed above; re-test affected rendering paths with known-good content and review update logs for successful application of patches.

1. Identify or craft content that triggers the use-after-free in layout or JavaScript handling
2. Host the content on a web server or deliver via email
3. Lure the victim into loading the content
4. Exploit the resulting memory corruption to achieve code execution
5. Establish persistence or exfiltrate data

How to detect it

Review browser and Thunderbird crash logs for memory corruption signatures, inspect web proxy and email gateway logs for access to suspicious domains around the time of anomalies, and search endpoint process execution history for unexpected child processes spawned from browser or mail client binaries.
