What it actually does

Memory corruption bugs in the browser rendering engine that can be leveraged for arbitrary code execution with no user interaction required beyond visiting a malicious page.

Attackers could gain complete control of user systems running outdated browsers, enabling theft of credentials, installation of malware, or lateral movement; the issue is long-public with public exploits available but has not appeared in widespread ransomware campaigns.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker hosts a specially crafted webpage that triggers one of the memory-safety flaws when parsed by a vulnerable Firefox or Thunderbird instance; with sufficient effort the corruption is turned into remote code execution, allowing the attacker to run arbitrary payloads on the victim machine.

How to fix it

Upgrade Mozilla Firefox to version 100 or later, Firefox ESR to 91.9 or later, and Thunderbird to 91.9 or later; ensure automatic updates are enabled and audit any pinned or embedded browser instances.

How to confirm the fix worked

Query installed browser versions across the environment and confirm all instances report 100+, 91.9+, or 91.9+ respectively; re-scan after patching to verify absence of vulnerable binaries.

1. Deliver a malicious URL via phishing, compromised site, or drive-by download
2. Victim browser renders the page and triggers a memory-safety bug
3. Attacker converts the corruption into code execution
4. Payload establishes C2, exfiltrates data, or drops additional malware

How to detect it

Review browser crash logs and EDR telemetry for unexpected child processes spawned by firefox.exe or thunderbird.exe; correlate with web proxy logs showing visits to recently registered or suspicious domains around the time of any anomalous process activity.
