What it actually does

Use-after-free in SVG text reflow handling leads to memory corruption that can be leveraged for arbitrary code execution within the browser or email client process.

Why it matters to the business

Compromise of user workstations or email clients can result in credential theft, malware deployment, and loss of sensitive data, increasing incident response costs and regulatory exposure.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker delivers a crafted SVG object via a malicious web page or email that forces a text reflow operation; the resulting use-after-free condition is then abused to corrupt memory and achieve code execution, consistent with publicly available exploit techniques targeting Mozilla products.

How to fix it

Upgrade Firefox to 98 or later, Firefox ESR to 91.7 or later, and Thunderbird to 91.7 or later; apply the updates through official Mozilla channels or enterprise deployment tools.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm installed versions meet or exceed the fixed releases and review update logs or application inventory for successful patch deployment.

Typical attack path

  1. Serve or send content containing a malicious SVG element
  2. Trigger repeated text reflow operations to free an object while references remain
  3. Leverage the dangling pointer for memory corruption primitives
  4. Execute arbitrary code within the browser or Thunderbird process

How to detect it

Inspect browser and Thunderbird crash reports for SVG text reflow failures, monitor process termination logs for unexpected Firefox or Thunderbird exits, and review web proxy or email gateway logs for delivery of SVG content from untrusted sources.

What your security team should do

  • Expedite deployment of the listed Mozilla updates across all endpoints
  • Enable automatic updates where policy permits
  • Review crash reports for SVG-related use-after-free signatures
  • Block known malicious SVG patterns at network and email gateways

The record

An attacker could have caused a use-after-free by forcing a text reflow in an SVG object leading to a potentially exploitable crash. This vulnerability affects Firefox < 98, Firefox ESR < 91.7, and Thunderbird < 91.7.
