What it actually does
Multiple memory safety bugs in the browser engine that can cause memory corruption and, with sufficient effort, arbitrary code execution.
Why it matters to the business
Successful exploitation could allow remote attackers to run malicious code on end-user systems, resulting in data theft, malware deployment, loss of user privacy, and potential disruption of business operations that rely on the browser.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker crafts a specially formatted webpage that triggers one of the memory corruption conditions when rendered in a vulnerable browser version; with enough effort the corruption can be turned into arbitrary code execution within the browser process.
How to fix it
Upgrade to Firefox 97 or later, Firefox ESR 91.6 or later, and Thunderbird 91.6 or later; enable automatic updates and verify installed versions across the environment.
How to confirm the fix worked
Check installed product versions against the fixed releases, review update logs, and confirm that no vulnerable instances remain in use.
Typical attack path
- Attacker prepares and hosts a malicious webpage containing the exploit payload
- Victim is enticed to visit the page using a vulnerable Firefox or Thunderbird release
- Rendering of the page triggers memory corruption
- Attacker gains arbitrary code execution inside the browser sandbox or process
How to detect it
Review browser crash reports and memory-related error logs for anomalies; correlate with web proxy or endpoint logs showing visits to suspicious domains around the time of any unusual process behavior.
What your security team should do
- Immediately deploy the fixed browser releases to all endpoints
- Enforce automatic update policies for Mozilla products
- Monitor vulnerability disclosure feeds for any newly published exploitation details
- Consider application allow-listing or sandboxing for high-risk user populations
The record
Mozilla developers Paul Adenot and the Mozilla Fuzzing Team reported memory safety bugs present in Firefox 96 and Firefox ESR 91.5. Some of these bugs showed evidence of memory corruption and we presume that with enough effort some of these could have been exploited to run arbitrary code. This vulnerability affects Firefox < 97, Thunderbird < 91.6, and Firefox ESR < 91.6.
